Functional Testing

Organic Acids Test (OAT)

What is it?
The Organic Acids Test (OAT) is a urine-based test that provides an overview of metabolic markers. It looks at by-products of normal biochemical processes to help identify patterns that may be relevant to your nutritional and lifestyle support.

What can it show?
The OAT may offer insight into:

  • Energy production and mitochondrial activity
  • Nutrient-related markers, including B vitamins and antioxidants
  • Markers associated with neurotransmitter metabolism
  • Indicators of gut microbial activity (such as yeast and bacteria)
  • Detoxification-related patterns

This test is not used to diagnose medical conditions but can help highlight areas that may benefit from nutritional support.

How does the process work?

  • A urine sample is collected at home using a test kit
  • The sample is sent to an accredited laboratory for analysis
  • Results are reviewed and discussed during your consultation

How results are used
Results are interpreted alongside your symptoms, health history, and goals. They are used to inform personalised nutrition and lifestyle recommendations and, where appropriate, to help determine whether further investigation or referral to a medical professional may be advisable.

Hair Mineral Tissue Analysis (HTMA)

What is it?
Hair Mineral Tissue Analysis (HTMA) is a non-invasive test that measures mineral content in the hair. As hair grows over time, it can reflect longer-term patterns of mineral deposition.

What can it show?
HTMA may help identify:

  • Patterns of mineral balance and imbalance
  • Levels of certain trace elements
  • Ratios between key minerals
  • Trends associated with the body’s response to stress

This test does not diagnose deficiencies or medical conditions but provides a broader view of mineral patterns that may be relevant to your nutritional programme.

How does the process work?

  • A small hair sample is collected at home following clear instructions
  • The sample is sent to a specialist laboratory
  • Results are analysed and discussed in your consultation

How results are used
Findings are considered within the context of your overall health, diet, and lifestyle. They are used to guide personalised recommendations, particularly around dietary intake and nutritional balance.

Functional Terrain Assessment (FTA)

What is it?
The Functional Terrain Assessment (FTA) is a non-invasive, in-person screening that looks at general physiological patterns within the body. It is designed to provide a broad overview rather than diagnose specific conditions.

What can it show?
The FTA may provide insight into:

  • Acid–alkaline balance
  • Stress and adrenal-related patterns
  • Cardiovascular indicators
  • Urinary markers of metabolic function
  • Tissue mineral trends

It offers a snapshot of how different systems may be functioning together.

How does the process work?

  • The assessment is carried out in person during your appointment
  • It involves a series of simple, non-invasive tests and observations
  • Findings are available immediately and discussed with you on the day

How results are used
The results are used to support a personalised nutrition and lifestyle plan. Where appropriate, they may also help identify whether further testing or referral to your GP or another healthcare professional is recommended.

How Testing Fits Into Your Programme

All functional testing is optional and only recommended where it may provide useful additional insight.

These tests are not intended to diagnose or treat medical conditions. They are used to support a personalised approach to nutrition and wellbeing.

All findings are interpreted alongside your full health history, symptoms and goals, and any recommendations are designed to complement, not replace, medical care. If needed, you will be advised to consult with your GP or other qualified healthcare provider.
